Know Before You Go

Curious about Peru before your trip? Let us answer the most common questions and have you packing with confidence.

Most people come to Peru to witness the legendary Machu Picchu. But Peru is so much more than that. Did you know that it hosts some of the best restaurants in the world? Or that there’s a real desert oasis awaiting for you full of thrilling adventures?

Peru has it all – beaches, mountains, and rainforests; big cities and ancient ruins. It’s more diverse than any other country we have visited and there’s for sure something for everyone.

Peru is generally safe, particularly in major tourist hubs such as Cusco, Lima, Arequipa, and Machu Picchu, where police presence is notable. However, exercise caution in crowded markets and public transportation, and remain vigilant in specific areas. When trekking in remote regions or exploring the Amazon, look for reputable tour operators for increased safety.

Peru is relatively affordable for travelers, especially compared to many Western countries. However, expenses can vary depending on your travel style and the regions you visit. Also, be aware that visiting the renowned Machu Picchu comes at a quite high price tag.

Have a look into our posts for detailed insights into estimated costs for specific destinations, helping you plan your journey more effectively.

Most visitors from countries like the US, Canada, UK, Australia, the EU can enjoy visa-free entry for up to 183 days.

However, some exceptions and specific requirements for other countries might apply, so it’s best to check directly with the official sites. In some cases you might be asked to present a proof of return/onward ticket when entering Peru.

A common recommendation for a trip to Peru is around 10 to 14 days. This allows for a comprehensive visit, covering highlights like Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lima, and perhaps even the Amazon or Lake Titicaca.

However, you might want to extend your stay to three weeks to include other spectacular places such as the desert oasis Huacachina, phenomenal Nazca or embark on one of the breathtaking hikes in the Andes.
